    I’m a writer!

When can you call yourself a writer? With that debate still unsolved, I continue to wonder if I can call myself so. After all, I am now a former Incident Coordinator, a former library assistant and therefore a former ‘employed being’ altogether. And that sounds rather bad for one’s ego when pondered upon too long. Asked by people what on earth I now fill my days with when I’m forced to dedicate most of my days to rest and sleep, I simply tell them “I write.” Instantly eyebrows raise higher than one’s crown chakra and a slight shaking of the head indicates the dismay – envy perhaps? – and inner thoughts that spell “this girl has lost it for good.”

    Liebster Award with a twist!

Yesterday I came upon a blog post by one of my top favourite bloggers Experienced Tutors. Dean was given another blog award but because of getting so many, wanted to skip the usual format of forwarding the award and instead do something else altogether. This tutor loves bending the rules for fun, and who could blame him. In Dean’s own words: “I have decided not to pass the award on directly but those of you want it and are willing to pass it on must earn it. So, the rule is, you need to complete the following sentence: “I would love to receive the Liebster Award from Experienced Tutors because. . . ” This is not a competition because all who reply will receive the award.“

    Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness Day

Tomorrow is the first Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness Day, focused on bringing awareness about facial pain disorders. This year I have gone through severe TN attacks myself and I therefore want to spread awareness about Trigeminal Neuralgia, also called “the suicide disease” because of the severity of pain experienced. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-8PCv4UWJo&w=420&h=315] “The presumed cause of TN is a blood vessel pressing on the trigeminal nerve as it exits the brainstem. This compression can wear away the protective coating around the nerve (the myelin sheath). TN symptoms can also occur in people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a disease caused by the deterioration of myelin throughout the body, or may be caused by damage to the myelin sheath by compression from a tumour.

    Princesses and Docs

Clothes are an important part of my life. Never pleased with just the ordinary, what everyone else wears these days, I try to find clothes that will always bring that “Oh, that is so you, Billie!” Different, alternative and indeed, that “typically me” type of clothes. Dr Martens boots matched with pretty dresses have been my style for the past two years. Grace to an injured Achilles tendon, I had to find boots that encapsulated my foot, hence again falling for Dr Martens boots. I haven’t looked back since; two years later I still wear them as much as possible. In fact, I hate summers, partly because it is simply too warm outside to wear them. Only this morning I took Instagram pictures from my boots surrounded by fallen leaves…

So many books, so little time!

Yesterday morning – rain, wind, a slight chill in the air – I walked totally wrecked and at snail pace towards the bookshop. Voucher in hand, lots of titles written down on paper just in case my memory checks out on me again. For a while now I had been looking at certain books, longing to buy them someday. That day came yesterday. Proud as a turkey and all dolled up, I went to Chapters in Dublin and kept pushing the elevator buttons to speed up to deliver me the second-hand part of the shop. As I left the elevator, right in front of my eyes stood Friedrich Nietzsche. He looked proud and dapper in a new jacket, and I had to agree he looked better than I did. I ran towards…

    Ooooh… :(

Didn’t make the finalist list in the Ireland Blog Awards competition but still quite happy to have been longlisted and shortlisted from 168 blogs to the best 28 in the Best Personal Blog category. Here’s to more blogging, writing and hopefully getting to the finalist stage next year! ©Willeke Van Eeckhoutte and Ireland, Multiple Sclerosis & Me, 2011-2013.
