Caged
In a recent visit to Dublin Zoo, I sat down next to a snow leopard busy contemplating life, separated only by a thick window. It was still early morning, and nobody was around. Time seemed suspended as we were taking in each other’s presence and it was a soul-searching as well as soul-enhancing experience.
While there, I thought about the kind of people that create problems on so many levels while others mean well and only speak from the heart. On the other side of that coin, so many incredible, misunderstood animals like Amur leopards as well as snow leopards, wolves, whales or arboreal mammals are ruthlessly hunted or driven from their habitats and a only seem to have a future on Planet Earth when they’re protected and locked up behind a window or fence.
Sitting next to a wild animal just an inch apart – it was also a thought-provoking experience. It just didn’t feel right, and I felt guilty belonging to the group of mammals that kills animals for fun. Who is the wild animal, now? A large juxtaposition that could not be ignored.

At the zoo in San Diego the snow leopard is caged across a wide road from his favorite food, the blue sheep. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. Beautiful photo and post!
Billie
Oh wow not sure if that is a healthy thing either Martha, imagine how the snow leopards salivating all day long! 🙂

A wonderful study. How sad that it couldn’t be taken of him, equally unthreatened, out in a natural environment.
Mind you, I have reason to know that some of our local leopards have become incredibly good at keeping a low profile, even in quite populated areas.

Indeed… it’s very sad any animal like this should be caged, but if it helps their existence, then that’s the only option.

The preferred one would be to cage the humans that threaten it, but I suppose that is unlikely to happen …

Just curious… do you have 2 web sites? I just got a ping back with the same photo from a different site. Just wanted to be sure it was you also.
It is a great picture. In Niagara Falls a local magician used to have a white tiger…. beautiful. He let it go to a zoo though so it could be bred. Too bad since it was a show stopper.

I do have two websites indeed, but haven’t been active on it all week because of MS fatigue 🙁

OK it seemed funny how they were so similar and for a minute I thought someone was ripping off your ideas 😉
Take it easy and take care.

What a beautiful snow leopard and experience. It is sad they can’t live freely without being hunted to extinction.

It’s very sad indeed, that is why I love Dublin Zoo’s fight to do so much for animals.
