World MS Day 2013: raise awareness
UNCRPD – Getting Ready to Ratify (2)
Like mentioned last Friday, I went to a conference on the hopefully soon-to-be ratified UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and this Friday, I will attend a second conference about this. Before I received both invitations, I was unaware of the CRPD. My first thought was “Oh I thought there were already rights in place for people with disabilities?” Not so, and I have tried to learn about conventions and optional protocols since then. It’s testing though, remembering article 1 by the time I’ve arrived at article 2 is a bit of a challenge, but challenges don’t scare me. On the contrary.
UNCRPD – Getting Ready to Ratify (1)
"What I’d like to try if I were guaranteed not to fail is to implement the UN Convention on the Rights for People with Disabilities. Too many disabled people all over the world are hurting because of existing inequality, dogma and exclusion. In Ireland for example, people are being denied inclusion and that needs to end now. Getting the Convention ratified so is of major importance, even if/when governments are not interested in doing so."

A Great Moment in My Life Award
Awarding the people who live in the moment The noble who write and capture the best in life The bold who reminded us what really mattered Savouring the experience of quality time Experienced Tutors – who give private English tuition – passed on this memorable award to me. Am I happy and do I feel blessed because of this? Absolutely! Doing back flips, triple Salchow jumps and to top it off, a… if-I-may-say-so… brilliant high jump onto my bed… that’s how happy and blessed I am! (my mattress is groaning under the strain of the jumps, but it knows me… heaven only knows I spend a lot of time sleeping on it! So yep, from my mattress and myself: Experienced Tutors, thank you!)
MS: lesson in minimalism
Can I let you in on a little secret? It’s something meaningful and I’d like to share it with you. Before getting all philanthropic and philosophical, having multiple sclerosis is not a nice thing. Or a happy thing. Not when you’ve just been diagnosed. It’s a long road to acceptance. In between hearing ‘You have MS’ and saying to yourself, ‘You know what, I am OK with that’, you will find yourself falling over (sometimes literally), you will feel awful because of side effects of your medication, and you will sometimes curse at your body’s lack of accomplishments. Being diagnosed is definitely something you never thought would happen to you.
