You might think, “Not another picture about MS!?”
You’re right. It is another picture about MS. This one however, is different.
I hope that after reading this article, you will have learned how the Irish MS society (also called MS Ireland), is able to provide hope where there’s none, not only through utter commitment and hard work, but also with quiet strength.
The society focuses on advocacy, support, service provision, information, education as well as sponsoring research and spreading awareness. A small core of 120 employees manage regional as well as national services. Providing support to 8000 people with MS in Ireland is therefore a gigantic task.
Last year’s income fell by 8% compared to that in 2012, leading to services being reduced in size and nature. But on they go. The society does so much with so little money, and is helped by a small army of volunteers to do more, much more.
They allow people like myself to volunteer as a spokesperson to put political pressure on policy makers or to raise awareness and/or teach those who want to learn about MS. In other words, each time you see something about MS on my Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon and other personal social media pages, you can bet I’m doing so to raise awareness.
With Christmas just around the corner, the society is once again reminded of how small their budget has become. Still, they bring out the best in people, so why not be part of this for the price of a pint of Guinness, a scarf in Penneys or a Toffee & Honey Hot Chocolate in Starbucks by joining the Festify craze? Check how to here, and make sure you share the latest move to help people with MS!
If you’re in Ireland, text Festify to 50300 to donate €4 for Christmas. If you want to give a larger amount if you are living abroad, you can go to http://ms-society.ie/pages/donate to donate any amount you wish to the society. A lifetime membership costs €50 ($67 or £40), and ensures much-needed services to people with MS can be retained or improved.
Please consider this membership request as a matter of urgency in order to provide continued support to those who need it most.
Thank you for considering this,
