W.B. Yeats in Sligo, Ireland
In July I visited Sligo in the west of Ireland, where William Butler Yeats is engraved in Drumcliffe near his beloved Ben Bulben mountain. Since I am a big fan of Irish literature, and have a very definite weakness for Yeats’ poetry and life, I took several pictures from a different angle. I was trying out my new smartphone and unfortunately for the thingie; it had to take a lot of photography abuse from my part!
Bronze and stone sculpture featuring “He Wishes For the Cloths of Heaven” at Drumcliffe Cemetery; work of the well-known sculptor Jackie McKenna of the Leitrim Sculpture Centre.
“Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.”

Sligo was my favorite magical part of Ireland …

Beautiful post, Billie. Yeats is so, so special.

Thank you Jean! He surely is; reading a biography right now and he is even more magical to me now 🙂

I’m reading a WB book on Irish legends at present Billie, otherwise I know little about him. I need to put Drumcliffe on the ever-lengthening list of Irish places I need to visit.
Billie
Just like Joyce’s Ulysses, you almost need to have his biography next to the book; and same with Yeats. Reading his biography right now and he was such a diverse man, and I cannot wait to get back into his faerie legends knowing what I know about the man now. And yes, do put Drumcliffe on the list of things to do, you will not be disappointed 🙂

“I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams…”

Billie
In my eyes, the most touching words ever created by man! 🙂
