Dingle, the golden hour
Weekly Photo Challenge: The Golden Hour by Cheri Lucas Rowlands on July 12, 2013: The Golden Hour. In photography, the “golden hour” is the first and last hour of sunlight of the day. Photographers venture out on sunrise hikes or sunset treks to capture a magical shot, due to the quality of the light during that time of day.
When I go to the Irish countryside for a short trip, I try to get a cab just before sunrise to drive me to quiet places to get the golden hour in a photograph. The two pictures below were taken on Ryan’s Daughter‘s beach on the Dingle Peninsula, south-west Ireland, where the famous film of David Lean was shot in 1970. The island pictured in the first photo is called the Dead Man, because it looks like a man lying down, hands tied in a prayer. The second picture shows the Three Sister mountain range in Dingle. Famous figures from Irish legends are said to live.

I’m still figuring how the island resembles a man lying down, hands tied in a prayer. But hey, thanks for sharing 🙂

The man is lying on his back, with his hands in a prayer on his big belly. Maybe tilt your head a little left or right, that could help 😀

Beautiful! We are planning to visit Dingle in September – any suggestions? Also, which is the beach where Ryan’s Daughter was filmed? Saw that as a teenager when it first came out with my mother and sister – and was mesmerized!

The beach is Coumeenoole Beach, between Slea Head and Dunmore Head.
The Blasket Islands were inhabited until 1953 by an Irish Speaking people who survived by fishing. There are boat services from Dingle to the main Blasket Island multiple times daily during peak seasons. This is a good link to find out more: http://www.dingle-peninsula.ie/
What I’d also suggest, though not part of Dingle, is doing the Ring of Kerry, which is in my eyes the most beautiful part of Ireland.

Thanks, Billie! That’s very helpful. I’ve been to Ireland once before, more than 15 years ago. It is a magical place. Don’t know why it’s taken me so long to get back there.

Beautifully captured Billie. I’ve been down that way several times over the years and it’s magical. To MixerUpper ^^ September is perfect to see the Peninsula. From Easter to August the coast road can be one nose-to-tail crawl.

Thanks Roy!
I understand, which is why I try to stay away from the west coast during those months. Plus if you go when it’s starts being cool in the morning, it adds to the atmosphere of a picture.

Thanks for letting me camp out in your blog for a little while today. I had a great time and tried to leave my campsite as good as when I arrived. I’ll be back!
Billie
You’re always welcome Russell! Feel free to drop by whenever 🙂

Our honeymoon in Ireland was the high point of my travels. I remember Dingle. I remember everything. I wish I could go back once more.
Billie

Your photos remind me of my visit to Galway…a beautiful place. Should have spent more time there. Thanks for adding a link to WoollyMuses blog.

My pleasure! Galway is beautiful indeed 🙂
